THE ARCHIE WEDDING, aka ARCHIE IN “WILL YOU MARRY ME?”, is the first Archie comic I’ve purchased in over ten years. I’d never invested much time in the adventures of those eternal teenagers, but hearing of this storyline from many major news sources, I figured this was a good opportunity to jump in. I’m glad I did, as it was a fully worthwhile and entertaining experience.
This “what if” story looks into Archie’s future not once, but twice, telling what happens to the Riverdale gang post-college based upon whether Archie marries Betty or Veronica. Thinking back to when Archie met The Punisher (yep, it actually happened in 1994), I found myself wishing for the stories to be introduced by The Watcher. Still, Robert Frost is a good substitute, with his famous poem “The Road Not Taken” serving as the framing device for Archie’s alternate timelines. While the focus is on Archie and his gal pals, the supporting characters receive plenty of attention. Many surprises are in store for the reader on both paths, with Moose being my favorite, and the fate of Dilton Doiley is hilariously appropriate for this type of story. It wraps up with an epilogue plus some reprinted newspaper strips from the period in which the comics were published. Rest assured that you won’t see any doom and gloom on the level of The Last Avengers Story, though the prospect is an entertaining one.
Even though these stories are just two of many possible futures, it’s nice to see that even Archie can grow up. Writer Michael Uslan has done this property a big favor, and from what I have read elsewhere, he has plans for more big events. This storyline brought Archie national attention, even getting a mention on The Colbert Report. After 70 years of stories, Archie still has the ability to catch people by surprise.

When news of the ‘event’ first came out in New York in February 2009, I was in shock and looked forward with anticipation of the comics that answered the question, who will Archie marry?
Versatile writer/producer and legendary Archie artist Stan Goldberg produced a stellar series that combined classic thremes, characters, celebrations, and memories beautifully. “The path less traveled” was a fantastic introduction into the storyline, and the conclusion was super.
I loved the book, and everyone at Walmart, comic stores, and my jobs did too. I hope it sold millions (or at least 100k). The compilation is exaclty what was needed for the collectors to keep their comics in perfect shape, and a great way to sequey into the trade paperback market.
Michael Uslan, you are brilliant. Thank you.
Stan Goldberg, you are under-rated.
Bob Smith, ditto.
To all those who were part of this storyline. Thank you.
I understand this is continuing. I can hardly wait!
PS great bonus daily strips too!
