Honestly, I am the co-author’s husband. I will say, however, that I know how much work she put into this, how much fun it is to read and how much her clients rely on the kind of advice and support she gives to authors in this book. I can’t imagine that a prospective novelist would not benefit a great deal from the specific, thoughtful and practical advice that Ann and Laura provide here in Your First Novel.

“Your First Novel” is the best all around writing and publishing reference I have discovered as a novice author! Within this book, you will get invaluable help on both the literary and business sides of writing. Enjoy the literary expertise and guidance of brilliant author Laura Whitcomb (“A Certain Slant of Light”, “The Fetch”, “Novel Shortcuts”), on developing plot lines, creating interesting and meaningful characters, and producing economical compelling prose and dialogue. You will also be afforded the invaluable insight and consultation on the business side of writing by Ann Rittenberg, storied and highly regarded literary agent and principle of Ann Rittenberg Literary Agency, Inc. of New York. If you’re just getting started, or even if you have finished a book or two, I highly recommend “Your First Novel”. Whether you are seeking writing advice or tips on best methods for getting the attention of literary agents and publishers, get a copy of “Your First Novel” The best reference for both sides of the writing world. Brilliant.

There are so many books on how to write, and many of them say the exact same thing, that an aspiring writer really only needs a few on their bookshelf. This book is definitely one of them. I’ve read it all the way through once, but I keep coming back to it for advice and inspiration. This is one of those books that not only gives great advice and techniques, but also gives a gentle and encouraging (though much needed) reality check. I keep this book next to my copies of Burroway, Goldberg, and Lamott’s classic books on writing.

If you are planning to write a novel or if you have already started, this is a wonderful reference. I have many books in my collection and I can honestly say that if I had to pick just one that covers most things, this would be it.
I learned a lot about the agent/author relationship that I had not read anywhere else. Great information about the process of what an agent does and what the editor does. Excellent information on advances and royalties and pretty much anything else I had questions about.
Each chapter also lists recommended reading, with a short note about why they would be good references. Many were titles I hadn’t considered, but will take a look at now.
